  • Prom Primping: Most Flattering Hairstyles for Different Necklines

Some of us spend just as long browsing online for the perfect prom hairstyle as we do shopping for dresses. It seems like the least of your concerns at first, but as the big day inches near, you realize you're totally clueless – especially if you're doing your hair yourself! Finding something that's elegant but easy can be really tricky, and on top of that, you want something that complements the neckline of the dress. That's why we've compiled a list of a few different hairstyles that you can definitely do yourself and that will also turn your dress into an ensemble.

    Halter Tops: Loose Braid

    roos1

Halter tops are tricky because you want to show off the pretty neckline, but they do show a lot of shoulder, which can cause some visual imbalance for those of us who are a bit broader across the top. Piling all your hair on top of your head can leave your shoulder area looking a little bare, while wearing it all down will cover up that pretty neckline. We think Blake Lively makes a good compromise by doing a loose fishtail braid thrown over her shoulder. You can wear it up high like hers, or you can start it down at the nape of your neck for a more beachy look. It helps that this style is super easy!

    Spaghetti Straps: Tousled Chignon

    roos2

When your dress has delicate elements on top, such as spaghetti straps, you want to play off of it with a delicate hairstyle. A tousled side-chignon, like the one Jessica Alba is wearing, is the perfect way to create a look that's feminine and romantic. Some subtle jewelry, like long earrings and a small bracelet, can really bring it all together. Click here for an easy chignon tutorial!

    One-Shoulder: Ballerina Bun

    roos3

Nobody opts for a dramatic, one-shoulder neckline with the intention of covering it up! Asymmetrical necklines are a show-stopper, so let them do all the talking by keeping your hair up and away. There's nothing more chic than a sleek ballerina bun with this neckline – it's such an elegant and classic hairstyle for a dress that has an edge. Go for natural eye makeup, a shimmery highlight, and a bold lip if you really want to make a statement with your style.

    Strapless/Sweetheart: Loose Side Waves

    roos4

Strapless dresses are well-loved as prom styles, and admittedly, they leave a lot of room to play around with hairstyles. That being said, there's nothing we love more than letting some loose waves fall over one shoulder when wearing a strapless dress. It reads slightly retro and extremely glam – just look how amazing Amy Adams looks in this look!  Here's an easy tutorial so you can do it yourself.

    High Neck: Chic Ponytail

    roos5

High necklines are all the rage this year – everyone from Kate Blanchett to Adriana Lima is wearing them. In our opinion, they look sleek and maybe a little bit mysterious when paired with a clean, simple ponytail. Just look at Allison Williams – she pulls off this look perfectly a bold red lip!

  • Creative Promposal Ideas

There's many ways to ask someone to prom (called a promposal!) - you can keep it simple and go with a straightforward invitation, or you can get as creative as your mind lets you! Whether you're a girl asking the guy to prom, or waiting for the guy to ask you, it's always fun to find a creative, unique way to do it. After all, it's a special night and one you'll never forget, so there's nothing wrong with making the invitation special, too!

We've been especially loving searching Pinterest for all of the cute ways people are being asked to prom. Below are some of our favorites - we hope they give you some great ideas of your own!

    Simple

If you want to keep your promposal simple, there's still plenty of creative ways that you can ask the question. We love the idea of getting a Starbucks barista to write "Prom?" on a specially made drink for your sweetheart. It's so simple, but will be sure to take your date by surprise and put a big smile on his or her face. The icing on the cake to asking your date with this method is to make sure you order his or her favorite drink.

    Starbucks

Another simple and cute way to ask someone to prom is with a teddy bear, of course! Because, who doesn't love teddy bears? A cute thing to do to add a personal touch could be to spray the bear with your perfume or cologne; this way, the bear will smell like you.

    Teddy Bear

    Romantic

Looking for a romantic way to ask someone to prom? We love the idea of asking on a ferris wheel - it will feel like the movies!

    Ferris wheel

Another super romantic way to get asked to prom is with lots and lots of roses, of course! We love this photo of a boyfriend asking his girlfriend to prom by spelling out "Prom?" on her bed with rose pedals.

    Roses

    Super Sweet

For a super sweet promposal, you can't go wrong with...sweets! Find a unique and fun way to pop the question with cookies, cupcakes, or chocolate, and you'll be sure to have a sweet, sweet evening.

We love the idea of getting custom M&M's that say "Prom?" on them! It really shows that the person put a lot of time and effort into the idea. After all, they have to be specially ordered from M&M's.

    M&M's

If you love baking, put your skills to work and make your own sweets for your promposal. We love how creative these cookies are - you choose the cookie that displays your answer. (How couldn't you say "heck yes!"??)

    Fun and Cheesy

Finding a funny way to ask your date to prom can help to lighten to mood for something that can seem serious and a little scary. Coming up with a cute slogan like, "Out of all the fish in the sea, will you go to prom with me?" will lighten the mood in an instant and have you both giving a good chuckle. And of course, how could you say "no" to a new little fishy friend? Just make sure to take care of it.

    Fish

When we say cheesy, we mean cheesy! We thought this idea was just too cute, and for sure gave us a good laugh. It's definitely a fun...and delicious...way to ask your date to prom. If you're a girl looking for cute ways to ask a guy to prom, they always say the best way to a man's heart through his stomach.

    Pizza Pie

    Personal and Meaningful

If you are in a relationship with the person you want to ask to prom, it's always a good choice to find a more meaningful way to ask the question. Since you are in a committed relationship with the person, you already know that you can expect a resounding "yes" to your promposal, so you can really pull out all the stops without being afraid! Especially for the seniors, this is probably your last big event of the year with your significant other, so make it special.

The Disney movie "UP" is both a sad and happy movie about a widower, so we loved seeing how a boyfriend found a creative way to incorporate the movie into his promposal.

    Balloons 400x400

It hands down doesn't get much cuter than asking someone to prom with a kitty! But, we put this in the "Personal and Meaningful" section because this is not something you want to do without knowing that the person you are giving the cat to can take care of the animal. You should talk to your date and his or her family ahead of time to make sure that they are ready, willing, and able to take care of the kitty as their new family pet.

  • Makeup Monday: the Must Have Orange Trend for Spring 2014

From the runways of Paris to the streets of New York City, there is a fabulously bold makeup trend that is written (painted) on every girls face! Although soft pinks and ethereal silvers are also big for Spring/Summer 2014, it seems like shades of orange and coral are all the rage. This orange craze isn't just the new classic red lip either, as it has become a beauty staple on eyes and cheeks, too!

Orange Makeup Runway ModelThis popping hue is so versatile and fun, it can be worn from morning to-night! Many girls have the misconception that these orange and coral shades can only be worn with certain skin tones, but the truth of the matter is they can be put on every face as long as the proper color is chosen and applied correctly. We recommend girls with warmer skin tones try something bright, perhaps with more tangerine notes. If you have cooler skin, try for something more bold and on the stronger coral/red side. Also, if choosing a matte orange lipstick, avoid adding anything extra like gloss and liner. Let the lips do all the talking!

When adding this shade to cheeks and eyes, it will give a bright hint of sunshine. If you are tan it will give you the right amount of glow, while if you are more fair-skinned, it will give cheeks and eyes a beautiful, unique pop.

Orange Eye MakeupJust remember when using these shades to try not to over-do it. Allow your face's natural beauty to add to the color, not the other way around. Try this trend for prom or any special occasion (Graduation, perhaps?) and I am sure everyone will be amazed how awesome you look!

  • A Promposal Car in front of Rissy Roo's!

We were so excited this week to see a promposal...right in the parking lot of our store at Rissy Roo's in Linwood, NJ! Highschooler Tyler had the creative idea to make his date's car into her prom proposal by using car paint to write the promposal on her windshield. The promposal said:

"Will you go to Prom with me?

    --  Yes!  --  No  --  (Choose 1)  -- Love, Tyler."

    Car Promposal

We especially loved all of the cute hearts that were drawn all around the windshielf! The lucky date clearly said YES, since the "Yes!" was circled on the car, and she's now already at Rissy Roo's picking out a dress!

If you're still trying to find a cute way to ask your date to prom (whether you're the guy or the girl), this is a really easy and fun way to do it. It will definitely help to keep any feeling of pressure or anxiety to a minimum! Plus, once the date says "yes," they'll get to show off the promposal to all of their friends for weeks to come, which is always fun. If you want other great prom proposal ideas, just search for keyword "promposal" on our blog, or click here for our promposal blog posts (there's even promposals with celebs Bryan Cranston, Miley Cyrus, and Dwyane Wade!). And, of course, if you're still searching for that perfect prom dress, get searching on RissyRoos.com - it's not too late, and we're definitely here to help!

Congrats on getting your date with your promposal car idea, Tyler! We hope you two have an amazing time at Prom this year!

  • Getting Ready for the Big Day – Your Prom Timeline

The sooner you start thinking about prom, the better – you want to feel prepared so that you aren't frazzled on the big day. Between finding a dress, a date, and a limo service, you've got a lot to figure out (not to mention you don't want to pay for all these things in the same week!).

Planning is a lot easier when you lay out everything that you have to do and form a loose schedule. Here's how we would do it.

    shutterstock_106478345

Three to Four Months in Advance

These are the things you might have already started doing, or should definitely start doing soon. The big one is finding a date, if you choose to go with one! If you've got your eye on someone, and they haven't asked you yet, you could always do the asking yourself. If not, you could always go alone and have a great time dancing! Of course, you should start shopping for prom dresses during this timeframe too, because your date is going to want to color coordinate and might have to rent a tux.

    Two Months in Advance

Book your limo or trolley, if you're taking one, two months in advance – remember, you might be competing with everyone else in your school or even local schools who have prom on the same night. You also want to figure out who else you'll be sharing the vehicle with so that you can round up some money. If you're not taking one, now's a good time to start making plans for getting to and from the venue. Finally, make a hair appointment if you're having someone do it professionally, because hair salons are busy this time of year and you can never book too far in advance.

    One Month in Advance

If necessary, a month in advance is a good time to get your dress altered if it's too long, too big, et cetera. Then, start accessory shopping for jewelry, shoes, and a clutch to match your dress. Start browsing hairstyles and makeup looks, and practicing if you're doing them yourself.

    Two Weeks in Advance

A few weeks before prom, start confirming appointments and reservations, like nail appointments and limo reservations. Decide where your group is going to meet for pictures and to be picked up by the limo, and make sure everyone is aware of the place and time. Find a local florist to order your date's boutonniere if you're taking someone.

One to Two Days in Advance

If you're not getting your hair and makeup done professionally, do a dry run to make sure that you can do it the way you want it. Pack your clutch with your prom survival kit: makeup touch-ups, makeup wipes, a travel-sized hairspray, a few extra bobby pins, a stain removal stick and some feminine products are always essential. Pick up the boutonniere if you ordered one, and do your nails or get them done.

    Day Of

    Get pretty and have fun!

  • Happy March! Are You Prom Ready?

We can't believe March is officially here already! It may still be freezing cold out, but Spring is just around the corner (the first day of Spring in 2014 is March 20th...only 16 days away!) and it's definitely time to start making sure you're Prom Ready if you haven't started yet.

    Prom Ready

What do we mean when we say that it's time to get prom ready? Well, it may be too early on to have a date yet and to start planning some of the simpler things like the limo and what you and your friends will be doing for After Prom, but it's definitely time to start putting your outfit together. Finding that perfect prom dress is obviously the most important factor, but don't forget that it's also important to pick out your high heels, a clutch, jewelry and accessories, and even your makeup and hairstyle.

We recommend starting with finding your dress first, since that can be the most tedious process with deciding what color, overall style, and length you want. You also want to make sure to leave enough time to get the dress hemmed to fit you perfectly. But, some people are obsessed wearing stand-out accessories, like eye-turning heels or a bold purse. If you're one of those people, you may find it helpful to plan your dress around the shoes or purse you want to wear with your outfit.

If you need some inspiration on where to start and love the dress in our image above, it's Nina Canacci style 7014. It's a hand beaded chiffon sleeveless gown that features a sweetheart neckline and a V shaped back. The straps and bodice are adorned with intricate pattern of beautiful embellishments, and the flowing skirt is emphasized with soft layers that cascades to a full length. The color shown above is Bubble Gum, but it also comes in an Aqua color.

Good luck with getting prom ready for Prom 2014! If you have any questions about a dress or even just want help finding what dress might be right for you, don't hesitate to give us a call, send us an e-mail, or even just leave a comment below.

  • Promposals for Him: What Type of Promposal Girl are You?

With prom on the way, we are all super busy trying to find the prom dress and accessories of our dreams to ensure our night is perfect! Not to mention the organizing of plans and parties, we are exploring with hairstyles and makeup trends to figure out what kind of prom look we want. With all the shopping and searching and planning, we may have overlooked one minor detail...what about a date? If you haven't been asked yet, don't fret as there is still plenty of time for your dream guy to ask you. However, it's totally okay to take matters into your own hands and ask your crush or friend first! There are countless ways to go about asking someone to prom, so to get your creative juices flowing, below are two ways to go around 'promposals for him' - a more simple way, as well as a bolder approach. What kind of promposal girl would you be?

    Simple Promposal Approach

Whether coming from the guy or the girl, prom proposals are all about exploring your creative side and putting some extra thought into a clever way to ask your potential date. With that said, it doesn't mean that it has to be done in an over-the-top way. For a simple promposal idea, try incorporating something you know the other person likes or is interested in to show how much you care. We love this cute idea of "winging" the promposal with some chicken wings! First of all, what guy doesn't like wings?? And, secondly, it's a cute way to remind the person that you're asking that you are doing something sincere that you've never done before, and will hopefully be a reminder for him to be sincere with a response in return!

    Wing It Promposal idea

    Bold Promposal Approach

If you're a "go big or go home" type of girl, you may want to do something a little more bold for your promposal. Whether you just want a cute way to ask your boyfriend to prom, or you're on a mission to prove how much this your potential date MUST go to prom with you, or it just seems like something fun to do, a bold promposal can seem scary, but also very rewarding! Bolder, bigger ideas can also be fun ways to have friends aid you in the process! With all of the snow that's been coming down this weekend, we thought the below idea of carving our "PROM?" in the snow was such a cute idea! This one's bold in the sense that it's BIG, but it's super fun, which helps to take any scariness out of the idea.

    Snowy Promposal Idea

Whatever promposal idea or approach you decide to take, and whatever the outcome ends up being, just remember to have fun! Just like Prom Night, your promosal will be one that you'll remember forever, so make it special and keep it light-hearted. And, if you have any ideas of your own to share, leave us a comment below!

  • Fashion Police: Dressing for Your Body Type

Just because a clothing item is trendy or expensive does not always mean it looks good. You've probably heard it time and time again - "dress according to your body type." Well, it's the truth!

    Your Body Type

To figure out how to best dress for your body time, it's always helpful to take a cue from celebrities. Let's take Kim Kardashian for example. This girl has every top designer at her fingertips, yet she is a repeat offender of wearing unflattering, tight, clothing. Don't get us wrong, we love Kim K. and her curves! She definitely has impeccable taste, and when she gets it right she looks stunning.

    kim kardashian cocktail dresses

However, one thing Kim seems to forget is that dressing for your body type is major. You do not want to end up with camel toe, a wardrobe malfunction or swollen feet. It's very important to keep your look classy and sexy and show off those curves in style. You can see Kim at her best looking classy in cocktail dresses above, and her forgetting the meaning of fashion in the images of her swollen and peplum outfit below.

    kim kardashian fashion no-no

    kim kardashian peplum

With that said, one celeb that always gets it right and is a personal favorite of ours at Rissy Roo's is Beyonce. Why? Because she is always polished and looking amazing, no matter where she is heading!

Just like Beyonce (and sometimes Kim K), when picking out that PERFECT outfit, whether it be a shirt, jeans, dress, or shoes, take into account YOUR body type. There are many different body types, so it's most important to figure out exactly what your body type is and read up on the best and most flattering ways to dress for it.

For example, women with the hourglass body tend to wear form-fitting clothes. This can look amazing (and who doesn't want to show off their curves?!), but ladies, we need to leave a little to the imagination, as well! There is a fine line between classy and trashy - especially when it comes to showing off those curves. This tends to be where Kim K. falls short when dressing up - she wears clothes that show off her hourglass figure, but aren't necessarily figure flattering. Marilyn Monroe said it many years ago, and her thoughts still hold true today: "Your clothes should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to show you're a lady."Marilyn Monroe quote

But, there are some rules that hold true for all body types! I have found that NO MATTER what body shape you have, making your legs look longer is most often very flattering. Depending on your height, you can easily alter the way your legs look by choosing dresses and skirts that fall at certain lengths on your thighs. You can also pick shirt lengths to help lengthen your torso, and certain pants styles that can help give you a figure-flattering look, all depending on the type of legs you have.

One rule to always keep in mind: no matter what you're wearing, make sure that you're comfortable with your look! Confidence is key to looking your best, and comfort is one important way to make sure that your confidence is high! And, always remember: beauty comes in many shapes and sizes!
