Promposals

What is a promposal you ask? A promposal is by definition an elaborate and public proposal to take somebody to a high school prom. Every year the boys get more creative, some will tug at your heart strings and others will have you laughing. Either way it is just amazing that they are thinking outside the box in stead of the typical "Will you go to prom?", they are giving us elaborate performances! Whats even better is that there are even a few celebrity promposals as well. Make sure you sign up for out newsletter, maybe your promposal will make Roo's News too!
  • Cleveland Browns' Cameron Erving Surprised High School Senior Elna By Taking Her To Prom

Elna is 17 years old, and is a high school senior in Elyria, Ohio. She is nonverbal and uses a wheelchair because she has a rare progressive disorder. Her boyfriend, Cody Wilson, died last fall, and didn't have a date for prom. Her parents, Ebony and Ingrid Wright, took to social media to see if an athlete of the Cleveland Browns might take her to prom, as Elna is a big cleveland sports fan. Cleveland Browns center Cameron Erving stepped up to tackle prom with Elna, and it couldn't have been sweeter! Watch the video below to learn more about Elna's special night.

We couldn't agree more with Cameron's statement: "I jumped at the opportunity, because I always thought that everyone deserves a great prom." As Elna's brother, Miles Wright, commented, prom is a culmination of your high school experience, as you move onto new stages in your life. We're so glad that Cameron helped to make Elna's prom such a special night for her. Cameron said about his experience: "Words can't really describe how I feel right now... To be able to bring that much joy to someone's life with such a small gesture." Continue reading

  • This Beauty And The Beast Promposal Is Too Cute

Every girl wants to feel like a princess on prom night, from the gown, to the date, to the transportation to the venue, to dancing the whole night away. Of course, with the popularity of promposals over the last few years, the days of feeling like a princess start as early as that special prom proposal. Whether funny, cute, or totally romantic, prom proposals are a special moment and bring a whole new level to the meaning of being a prom princess.

One of the latest promposals that we've stumbled upon takes a cue from the romantic side and is all-over heart melting. Creating a disney themed promposal in itself is always so fitting to make a gal feel like a princess, but this teen really took the disney theme to heart. He created a Beauty and the Beast promposal, and hit all of the major points. Check it out below!

The teen made his date, Allysen, feel like a disney princess by capturing that classic rose from Beauty and the Beast, complete with a "Will you be my guest?" note, a ring shaped like a princess crown, and a poster that says, "I've been looking for a princess to take to the ball." I mean, honestly... what more could be missing?! Probably only a complete prince outfit...  Continue reading

  • A Cute Volleyball Themed Promposal From An Oakcrest High School Student

It's Prom Season, and promposals are in full swing (along with finding your perfect prom dress, of course)! There are so many cute ideas that we've seen floating across the internet, and the most recent one comes from a high school that's not too far from our store in New Jersey, Oakcrest High School. Dana Cameron-Bucci recently shared with us the photos of a cute volleyball themed promposal between two Oakcrest students, Charlize Synder and Sean Stabile.

    Volleyball Promposal

When Dana sent us the photos, she explained that Sean made the prom proposal last night (Sunday, March 20th) at his wrestling banquet that Charlize attended with him. He performed the promposal to Charlize in front of the whole wrestling team, including coaches and parents! How sweet is that?!  Continue reading

  • This High School Promposal Gone Wrong Will Leave You Heartbroken

Lots of planning goes into promposals these days, and you can only hope for the best when it's time to pop the question. Most promposals go down without a hitch, as many times it's a boyfriend or girlfriend asking their significant other in a cute way to prom. But, there are cases where the proposer doesn't know if the proposee will actually be accepting, and this is one example of that.

This high schooler went for a daring prom proposal - asking the girl he hoped to go to prom with in front of an entire football stadium full of people. He must have thought this promposal was in the bag, but that it was not! After the high schooler asks his hopeful date over the microphone if she'll go to prom with him, he was let down anything but gently as the girl responds in the microphone, "I already have a date." Awww! You can tell the high schooler is shocked by his response, and we can't blame him.

How the word didn't get around that the girl already got a date is beyond me! That's what friends are supposed to be for, after all! Oh well, it might be a promposal gone wrong, but it's certainly something he'll look back on in a few years and get a good laugh out of, if he's not already.

Sadly, this isn't the only promposal fail we stumbled upon this year. For another cringing moment, check out Daniel's promposal fail... to his own girlfriend, of all people!

  • A Promposal Cake to Drool Over!

This year's promposals have been epic, and we know we're going to be super disappointed when Prom 2015 is over and the promposal and prom pictures become a distant memory. But, for now, there are still many amazing prom pictures and stories to share with you! The latest comes from one of our Roo Girls, Brianni (@briannimartinez on Instagram), who bought a La Femme dress from us earlier this year. See her special promposal below, as well as the prom dress she chose!

    The Promposal...

    Chocolate Cake Promposal

Brianni's promposal surprise was a delicious chocolate cake, that spelled our "Prom?" in chocolate syrup. Drooling yet?? Brianni wrote in the comments of the picture, "So here's my late, but cute, cheesy, but delicious promposal from my best friend #instagramlessluis #prom." All we can say is SUPER cute... and SO not cheesy (it's chocolately, duh!).

    The Prom Dress...

But, before the promposal cake came, she already picked out her dress! She came and visited our Rissy Roo's store in Linwood, NJ and found the perfect dress for her prom.

Guess who got their prom dress today??? #prom2k15 #imslightyready 🎀

  • Ariel Winter's Promposal Surprise Is Super Cute (And Funny)

Prom 2015 has brought prom proposals to new heights. Basically the days of simply just popping the question and asking someone to prom is over.... especially when it comes to celebrity promposals. Luckily, boyfriend of Modern Family star Ariel Winter knew he had a big task on hand asking a celebrity to prom, and had just the right tricks up his sleeve for Ariel's promposal. Because... not even being someone's boyfriend or girlfriend is enough to get out of promposals anymore!

So, Ariel's boyfriend convinced a friend to pop out of a box, holding a "PROM?" sign, and throw flowers at Ariel. And, when we say throw flowers... we mean literally just chuck a bunch of flowers right at Ariel! We think they were flower petals that were supposed to be lightly tossed at Ariel. But, as the saying goes, you say "to-may-to," I say "to-mah-to." It's pretty hilarious (and cute!), and Ariel got a good laugh out of it, too. Watch the cute promposal video below to see for yourself!

What do you think of the Ariel Winter promposal? It seems to fit her personality perfectly to us! And, her and her boyfriend look like they have a lot of fun together!

That's not all, though - Ariel already went to prom and you can see her in her prom dress on her instagram account! She wore an elegant black and nude lace dress that we're absolutely obsessing over. Recognize it? It's a Jovani dress that we sell at Rissy Roo's: Jovani style 78450!

Jovani style 78450 is a beautiful lace gown that features a plunging neckline and a sexy open back and nude underlay. This is definitely a dress that's fit for a celebrity. We can easily see this dress not only at prom, but on the Hollywood red carpet.

Arial Winter Prom Dress Jovani 78450

While Jovani 78450 is *the* Ariel Winter prom gown, there are plenty more dresses that are very similar to the look she chose. For a similar look, go with Mac Duggal 61930. Just like Ariel Winter's prom dress, it's a black and nude lace gown, featuring an open back, a plunging neckline, and cap sleeves.

Mac Duggal 61930Lace dresses, especially black and/or nude, are very popular for Prom 2015. So, if you don't like either of the above two prom dresses, there are plenty of other black lace dresses to choose from on RissyRoos.com if you want to take a cue from Ariel for prom or any other formal or semi-formal event.

By the way, could Ariel and her boyfriend look any more classy together?! Plus, the caption on her Instagram pic is sooo cute ("Shmoopberry and I take prom<3")! If you want to see more of Ariel in her Jovani prom dress, make sure to check out her Instagram account!

  • A Girl With Down Syndrome Gets A Special Promposal

Prom can not only be a fun time to dress up and have a special night out with friends, but it can also be a time for very special things to happen. Recently one of those very special moments happened at a high school in Kentucky. A basketball star at Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky, Trey Moses, asked a girl with Down Syndrome, Ellie Meredith, to be his prom date in the sweetest way possible. He proposed to her with a bouquet of flowers and a sign that referenced Taylor Swift, the girl's favorite singer.

    Trey Asks Ellie to Prom

Trey was originally going to ask his girlfriend to go to prom with him, but decided to ask Ellie instead. He texted Ellie's parents the night before to get their permission, and they were happy to say "OK!"

So, the next day, he showed up to Ellie's PE class with a sign saying, "Let's Party Like It's 1989." And, party they will do because Ellie said YES to the promposal!

This all happened in part due to a special program that Trey volunteers for, called Best Buddies. CNN, who wrote about the story, explained that "Best Buddies cultivates friendships between students with and without developmental disabilities and prevents students like Ellie from feeling isolated and left out of social functions. Trey also explained that he wanted to take Ellie to prom because, "She's great...she listens and she's easy to talk to."

Ellie is so excited for prom and can't stop thinking about it, saying, "I've only told about a million people!" Her mom explained, "Ellie can't wait to go dress shopping." We hope Trey and Ellie have an amazing time together at prom!

  • The Amount Teens Are Spending On Promposals in 2015 is Unbelievable!

Well, it's official: promposals are the best thing since sliced bread (and by sliced bread we mean a beautiful prom dress) when it comes to prom. A new nationwide study released by Visa Inc on March 31, 2015 shows just how popular promposals have gotten (by the way, if you want an 'official' definition of a 'promposal,' Visa describes it as: "elaborate invitations to the high school prom that can mirror a marriage promposal.").

Believe it or not, promposals are costing the average American household with teens $324 in 2015! Gone are the days of a simple note on the car of the person you plan on asking.

Visa Inc Promposals InfographicIn Visa's press release about their survey, they explain:

"Promposals have become significantly more extravagant in recent years and now represent in excess of one third of the $919 total that the average prom-going teen will spend on the dance in 2015....While total prom spending is down 6% this year from the $978 that parents and teens forked over in 2014, Visa added the category of promposal spending for the first time to the company's annual survey."

Just a few days ago, we had mentioned in a blog post how popular promposals have become this year. This survey certainly proves it! Visa notes that the average prom-going teen will spend $919 total in 2015; this means that just the prom proposal is one third the total cost for the average prom-goer this year.

While promposals are so much fun and definitely worth the time and effort to put into creating one, we have to agree with Visa's head of U.S. Financial Education, Nat Sillian, that spending $300+ on a promposal may be a little overboard.

Visa has the tools to help out, though! Visa offers a free Plan'it Prom App to help teens plan out their entire prom extravaganza on a budget. Visit PracticalMoneySkills.com/Prom for how to download the app for iOS and Android devices.
