  • Wisconsin School Creates Gender-Neutral Alternative to Homecoming King and Queen Tradition

With Homecoming Season here, there's a lot more that goes into being ready for your homecoming dance other than finding the perfect homecoming dress, shoes, and accessories. There's also the age-old tradition of choosing your high school's homecoming king and queen, of course!

Well, this tradition has been given a new spin by a Wisconsin high school - this year Madison West High School in Madison, Wisconsin are starting a new tradition of a gender-neutral alternative for their homecoming court. Instead of electing a homecoming king and queen, students can nominate 20 student who they feel best represent Madison West High School, and two students will be chosen "Regent Royalty," regardless of gender. The name comes from their school mascot, which is the Regent.

WMTV explained that this progressive idea was thought up last year, when it was proposed by Madison West High School Gay Straight Alliance members Arwen Sadler and Kate Scholz. And, they worked hard to see their vision through. Students at the high school collected almost 1,000 signatures from students and teachers who supported a more inclusive method for choosing homecoming court nominees. Their hard work paid off, because Homecoming 2015 is the first year this new homecoming policy will be put into place.  Continue reading

  • Lily-Rose Depp Shows How To Rock Homecoming Dresses Celeb Style

Actor Johnny Depp's daughter Lily-Rose Depp has been taking the media by storm lately, showing off her true fashionista skills, and we're basically obsessed. Most recently, she attended the launch party of Chanel's new Mademoiselle Privé Exhibition in London, where she rocked a lavender Chanel dress and black jacket and amazed all by her totally unique and chic style. So, ok, she may not have been attending a homecoming dance, but we're totally loving her look, one that couldn't be more perfect for showing off your own style at your homecoming dance.

    http://rissyroos.tumblr.com/post/180094956717/lily-rose-depp-at-the-launch-party-of-chanels-new

Her look is a perfect place to start for being inspired for homecoming not only because it's just classic stunning, but also because it's a totally funky, unique look. Teen Vogue perfectly described the look: it's "not only...mindbogglingly gorgeous, but also because it's fun and a little quirky."

So, to rock a fun, but classic lavender look like Lily-Rose Depp, you can try a dress like La Femme 16813, a cute short dress with ruffles on the skirt and a beaded top, just like Lily-Rose's dress. You can definitely twirl around in style in this dress!

Then, top off the dress with a black blazer to get a totally unexpected look that's, of course, perfect for the cooler fall weather. Try this long sleeve sequin open blazer for a dressy blazer that gives off a similar vibe to Lily's blazer.

After getting the lavender dress and black sequin blazer, all that's left to finish off the look is a simple black heel, rather than going with a high stiletto heel. After all, you can still be chic and practical! Go with Sweetie's Zabie Elegant Short Shoes for a similar choice to Lily's heels (2 and 3/4 inch heel). Or, for a slightly higher heel, go with Sweetie's Spice Open Toe Shoes (3 and 1/2 inch heel).

    Lace

Lace fabric continues to be popular season over season, and it's certainly not going anywhere any time soon. Pair lace with darker colors like maroon, navy, or black, and you have a quintessential fall look. Best yet, dark colored dresses that feature lace are perfect for the holiday season, too, which, believe it or not, is right around the corner.

  • Dress of the Week: La Femme 22061 + Accessories!

With only one day down, and only today and tomorrow to go for our Shoes and Accessories Sale, we thought we'd have a little mix and match fun! We picked out one of our favorite summer to fall transitional dresses, La Femme style 22061, and paired it with shoes and accessories that complete the look for perfection.

    La Femme 22061

La Femme 22061, one of La Femme's new Fall 2015 dresses, is such a classic look, with just the right amount of edge, that you can wear it to so many different events, from Homecoming to to a night out with your besties. So, with all of our shoes and accessories at 20% off through the end of Friday, August 21st, we thought this was a great time to show you how you can pair the little black dress with the perfect extras for a completed head-to-toe look.

Since La Femme 22061 is an LBD, this is one dress that's easy to pair with just about any shoes, jewelry, and purse; the most important thing is to make sure the accessories match each other (more than the dress). But, since style 22061 has that classic black lace look to it with the two two-piece trend adding just the right amount of glam, we love to keep the accessories in that range, as well. Check out our favorite accessories to pair below!

Clutch: La Regale RL22003 Stone Clutch - This glam all over stone clutch has an optional 22" drop-in chain strap and a magnetic snap closure. We love the classic black and gold colors of the clutch, with just a hint of glam added with the black stone features.

Bracelet: Pearl Bow Bracelet - A perfectly jeweled bow bangle bracelet with elegant pearl accents. It doesn't get much more classic, classy, and so chic than this bracelet!

High Heels: Jupiter by Touch Ups Sexy Jeweled Shoes - A stunning single soled sandal covered in wonderful black stones and features a sophisticated lamy material. Two buckles secure a thick ankle strap that provides a fashion-forward silhouette. The black stones on this heel match the black stones on the La Regale RL22003 clutch perfectly!

We hope you not only love our Dress of the Week pick, but all of the accessories, too! Remember, to get 20% off all of our shoes and accessories through tomorrow, just use promo code MUSTHAVE at check-out.

  • Best Dressed on the 2015 Teen Choice Awards Red Carpet

The 2015 Teen Choice Awards took the red... ahem ... blue carpet by storm with the latest and greatest in 2015 fashion, and we're loving all of the celebrity looks! The lady celebs rocked everything from jumpsuits to two piece cocktail dresses to sexy lace numbers. They certainly know how to rock the trends, and we're not complaining because so many of the Teen Choice Awards outfit choices had homecoming outfit written all over them! Or, maybe we're just a little excited for the Homecoming 2015 season to finally be here... Either way, there are three looks that we are especially obsessing over because they are so easy to rock off the red carpet, too! Check them out below.

Vanessa Ray at the Teen Choice Awards

Pretty Little Liars actress Vanessa Ray looked so glam in a so on-trend crop top and flirty skater skirt (she's on the left side in the video above). The textured skirt with a more simple fabric top make for a perfect pair in this look.

    La Femme 21244

For a similarly styled look, featuring a sweetheart neckline top with thin shoulder straps and a skater skirt, go with La Femme style 21244. Just like Vanessa's dress, it's texture paired with a more simple fabric, except it's just flipped in this look - a textured top with a silky smooth skirt! The top is encrusted with iridescent stones, and the full satin skirt features side slash pockets.

  • Top 10: Most Outrageous Homecoming Traditions

The annual homecoming game brings out the best of us in our homecoming traditions. Whenthe rock at hhs ny I was a student at Huntington High School on Long Island, we used to paint this big boulder at the corner of the back entrance of the parking lot to our school. Not just at homecoming, we would paint it in different themes throughout the school year and for special events, memorials and other such things. It’s one of those traditions that technically we were all vandalizing school property, but officials just looked the other way for the sake of tradition. We had some very talented artists so it was a really great way to get attention from the community.

All over the US students have very creative homecoming traditions to celebrate the occasion. Some traditions are associated with homecoming dances where women adorn themselves in gorgeous homecoming dresses and others are directly related to the game. Many schools and towns host a homecoming parade with floats made by students and teams. Other traditions include pranking the visiting team. Here is the countdown of the top ten truly unique, cute and quirky traditions across America.

     10. Student Participation

tug o war oregonThose students who aren’t athletes or band members also get in on the school spirit. Long standing rituals in high schools and universities encourage everyone to join in. Like the University of Oregon, located in the city of Eugene. They host an annual tug-of-war game before the homecoming game. This is a well-established tradition, going as far back as 1967. This playful game has taken hold in other states, going beyond the homecoming season. Such events have inspired the Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce to hold an official event during Summerfest in Wisconsin.

The University of Wisconsin at Platteville is the site of a large-scale construction project.the big m First created by mining students in the 1930s, a large letter “M” was created on the slope of a large hill just east of the city of Platteville. The project is  simply known as “The Big M”, which occupies a large area of 214 x 241 feet on the south slope. Students moved 400 tons of whitewashed stone to make this. The university has a past practice in mining engineering, hence the “M” stands for mining. Before the homecoming game and the dance, students use flares to illuminate the Big M, to pay homage to their rich history.

     9. Costume Parties

marching band costumeSome homecoming games fall on a date that is close to Halloween, on October 31. Schools take this opportunity to host a Costume Ball as a part of the festivities of homecoming week. At some schools, this dress up dance is exclusive to a certain group, like the football team or marching band members.

This practice is going strong after all these years at C.E. Jordan High. Located in Durham, North Carolina, C.E. Jordan High School has been hosting this dance since the 1980s. The band members wear scary costumes during their performance at the halftime show. These kind of rituals help break the monotonous routine that band members happen to be more prone to since they have a strict practice schedule. Continue reading
