  • Prom Tips: Plan a Timeline

In order to make sure your special night is a spectacular one, just a little planning can go a long way. Taking care of the following items will ensure a perfect night. After all, once it gets to the big day, it should all be about fun.

    Three months in advance:
Start your online search to familiarize yourself with the look you want to go for.
    • Order your dress and, if ordering online, be sure to get a shipping date and make sure to schedule for any alterations that may be needed.
    • While three months may seem like a long time, in terms of your prom dress, it's not! The most popular styles go quickly and since the perfect prom starts with the perfect prom dress be sure to snag that hot new style in your favorite color and size before another prom goer does.

    Two months out:
    • Begin looking through fashion magazines and search online for "prom hairstyles".
    • If you plan on going to a salon, schedule an appointment. Get something earlier in the afternoon, you don't want to be rushing around at the last minute. Continue reading

  • Bookbag Upgrade Anyone?

Jewelry and shoes add a special touch but the most important accessory may be one that you have overlooked all together.  Did you remember your evening bag? Yes, I called it an evening bag.... totally proper of me and an essential for your night. The perfect clutch carries a few necessary items and shouldn’t weigh you down. It’s a characteristic little piece of you that usually can fit no more than a cell phone, your favorite compact and lip gloss and maybe a house key! Your mini handbag comes in handy for your big night…

No one wants to carry around their book bag at Prom and your clutch is just that- clutch! With so many unique bags to choose from, your grab and go is an added element of style with a pop of color, shiny studs and sequins, or a cool printed fabric! You want to stand out at prom (i.e. prom registries) and along with your dress, hair and makeup, your clutch choice is a sweet extra to show your individuality and keep a few personal necessities close on your special night!

  • Color Cool!

Last Sunday, the stars graced the Red Carpet at the 2011 SAG Awards and they did not disappoint.  While nudes and blushes were chosen by many, thankfully we had some head turning, eye-popping color from a few of our favorite leading ladies!  Two of televisions funniest chose colorful gowns! ABC’s Modern Family star Sofia Vergara had two big wins; One for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy and the other for a knockout with Cavalli’s flawless ruching and curve enhancing royal jewel-toned gown! NBC’s 30 Rock genius, (this show is always up for awards come SAG season) Tina Fey was the talk of the night in her fitted and strapless red Oscar de la Renta gown!

Lead Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) also turned to Oscar de la Renta, choosing an off the runway electric (HOT) pink hit! This dress screamed “Check me out!” The color was something rarely seen on Red Carpets! Young and fun...LOVES IT! Kim Kardashian wore a gorgeous deep purple Marchesa gown... her usual one-shoulder gown (typical) yet threw everyone for a loop with her untypical and toned down hair and make up! Oh Kimmy, you kill us!

Bright, bold and brilliant color choices ladies… you're all winners (except for Kim K. who sadly will have to wait for Outstanding Performance by a Reality T.V. star to get picked up as a SAG category). With the Grammys and Oscars around the corner, we’re looking forward to see what you pick next! Who was your best dressed at this years SAG Awards?!

  • Get Moving on Prom 2011!

Your prom is sooner than you think! The groundhog made his prediction! With the winter storms almost behind us and day light savings soon to stretch our days with sun rays, the warm weather fun can be distracting! With spring on its way and the promise of summer vacation around the corner, it’ll be hard to remember that you can't wait until the last hour to find your prom dress!   If you are planning to attend prom this year, take it from me- you need to get moving!

    1.       Availability is limited! Designer’s selection can be sold out quickly and most retailers will only have a dress in a few sizes and colors. In order to guarantee the style you want, it is ideal to get your dress as early as possible.

    2.        Set a few weekends in February and March aside to check out the local dress boutiques. Most retailers begin stocking their stores to ready for the prom rush as early as January. Get there early, and you’ll see some of the hottest and newest trends for the season, not to mention the best selection.

    3.       If you’re shopping for your prom dress online, check availability with the website you’re intending to buy from to ensure that your dress will be available in time for your prom.   Be sure to investigate designer size charts - A local seamstress can help you with your measurements to ensure proper fit!

Most of us require some adjustments in dress fit.  (And if your dress fits perfectly, you hit it out of the park!) Getting a move on your prom shopping as soon as possible will allow time for alterations and fittings.  By doing your prom homework (yes, after your school work) and buying your dress in the early hours of prom season, you can make sure that your dress is the perfect complement to your special night!

Best of luck with your prom shopping! Prom will be one of your most memorable high school experiences!Enjoy it!!

  • Stay Golden, Ponyboy!

Some stars hit and some stars missed at the 68th Golden Globe Awards this past Sunday.  Unlike Joan Rivers, I could careless who missed, I was just happy to see what celebrity stylists outfitted Hollywood's hottest starlets in! Here are some of the stars that stayed golden on this years Red Carpet...

The reoccurring color theme of the night seemed to be a mix of greens, nudes and blush tones - All of which were stunning! Our favorite leading ladies never seem to fail us.. Take a few pointers from them as you make your next evening wear choice - you can't go wrong in Hollywood! (I'm kidding, Joan Rivers, relax!)

  • ** Trend Alert ** Prints Part I: Spotted!

Open a fashion magazine lately? If you're reading this blog, I'd assume you have and if you took the time to flip through it, I'd assume you came across a page dedicated to Animal Prints.  Animal prints have gained momentum in our wardrobes. First we started with one piece, maybe a cardigan or a tank top. Next came Animal Prints in our jewelry and handbags, followed by shoes and now larger pieces like jackets and dresses. It is only right that we mention that this includes prom dresses.

Many people assume that most Animal Prints are leopard.  This is an easy error and leopard, without a doubt, has been the most popular, but leopard, jaguar and cheetah are all similar to each other as you can see below.  The three are so similar and common that many of us assume one as the other. The chart below can help you to distinguish the difference in prints. Other popular prints this season include tiger, zebra and giraffe.

Prom dress designers are jumping at the chance to use Animal Prints in their designs for Spring 2011. From the subtle hint of the print to the obvious and daring full print, Animal Prints are in this Prom. Check out a few of my favorite, "standard" Animal Print dresses... Continue reading
