  • Fitness Friday - 5 Drinks that will help you Lose Weight

This Fall losing weight might be a little bit more challenging since the warm weather of summer will be fading away.  Our bodies naturally want to pack on more pounds during the cold seasons, so in order to maintain or lose weight you need to focus on your diet.  If you want to stay in shape to fit into a special dress for Homecoming or the Holidays then you should think about adding these healthy drinks to your diet to help with your weight loss.

    • Organic Pomegranate Juice

If you can’t get enough of soft drinks or sugary juices, organic pomegranate Juice is a healthy alternative.  This super fruit is tasty and packed full of nutrients.  Pomegranate Juice, high in antioxidants, actually helps your body to fight off sickness as well.  While a Diet Coke might have 0 calories, it doesn’t have the health advantages of this fruit juice.  Pomegranate juices contain more antioxidant than green tea, red wine and cranberry juice, but are often forgotten about when it comes to picking out a healthy drink.  Livestrong’s Will McCahill suggests that you check the label before buying pomegranate, or any other fruit juices, to ensure you’re picking a brand with low sugar.

    • Ice Cold Water

Ice Water Weight LossSince our bodies chemical composition is 60% water, we need H2O to stay hydrated.  Drinking any liquids will do this, but drinking plain water means you’re not additionally ingesting calories that will hinder weight loss.  CNN reported that drinking water instead of soda or sugar filled juices can drastically change your weight loss process.  Specifically, drinking cold water can actually help your body burn calories.  Since your body has to use energy to warm the water inside of you, a few calories are burned in the process.   It’s also a good idea to drink a glass or two of water before meal times.  Doing so will fill you up faster so that you don’t eat as much food.  If you’re terrible at portion control, this is a simple way to help lose weight.

  • Trend Setter – The Hourglass Dress

This Fall there’s a new shape to fashion: The Hourglass.  Dresses this season are taking a step back in time to the prim fit that used to rule the world.  No longer just a vintage style from the 40s and 50s, The Hourglass Dress is hitting the mainstream.

The Hourglass Dress accentuates the bust and hips.  This fashion is known as the woman’s best friend, allowing you to show off your natural curves.  While there are stick thin models walking the runways, the real trend is feeling confident and comfortable in whatever shape you’re in.

The 50’s fit gets an update this Fall with new modern prints and accessories.  Even if you don’t have an hourglass figure, like most of us, you can still pull off the Hourglass Dress.  Wear a blazer, jacket, or cardigan with your dress to give it a more modern feel, and add on a belt to your outfit for a cinched waist look.  Thick or thin belts worn at the waist will give you the hourglass look.

Many celebrities are also taking part in the action around London this week by attending Olympic parties all over the city.  On Wednesday Muhammed Ali was the honored guest of a charity gala at the Victoria & Albert museum, raising money for Parkinson’s disease research, which the boxing legend has suffered from for 30 years.   Ali won gold at the Rome Olympics 52 years ago.

Other Hollywood royals including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be rubbing shoulders with diplomats and other stars at high-end clubs and private parties throughout the Olympic Games.    Nicole Kidman is reported to be attending some of the sporting events next week, and will be making appearances at other special events, including a publishing house launch party.

Olympic Stadium London The Olympic Stadium in London will seat over 100,000 guests at Friday's opening ceremony.

Of course the most important guest at the opening ceremonies will be Queen Elizabeth II who, as the head of state in the UK, will announce the official the start of the games.  The always charming Prince William will also be in attendance with his wife Kate and the entire royal family.  U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama will be in attendance, along with Republican candidate Mitt Romney.  Former Beatle Paul McCartney will also make an appearance Friday night as the closing act of the ceremonies.

Those of us in America will have to wait until 7pm EST tonight to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremonies on NBC.  Rumors of what might happen at the event include a massive Voldemort being destroyed by Mary Poppins, and a spectacular appearance from James Bond himself.  It’s sure to be a night chuck full of British cultural references, so every Anglophile will definitely be in for a treat.

  • How to Get Olympic Fit – Nutrition is Key

The Huffington Post recently interviewed Abby Wambach of the US National Soccer Team to find out what it takes to get into shape like an Olympic athlete.  She discussed just how dedicated Olympic athletes must be to a specific workout and diet regiment in order to maintain their physical fitness.

“As professional soccer players, we take our bodies to the extreme. We're the people at the gym that look like we're breaking the machines. Pushing our bodies to the limits is what makes us so strong and capable and Olympians. It's not an easy thing to consistently do over and over again to your body.” (Huffington Post)

Wambach says a well balanced nutrition is key to getting in shape.  Eating well isn’t just something an athlete does during their sport season, but something that becomes a regular part of their lifestyle.  If you’re looking to lose weight or eat healthier than you really need to stay dedicated to a specific diet.  Occasional indulgences won’t hurt you, but staying on the wagon and making healthy foods a regular part of your day will help your body overtime.

Here are some tips we compiled on how to eat like an Olympian:

    1. Drink lots of water!  Turkish female wrestler Elif Jale Yesilirmak says that she drinks up to 4 liters of water each day (that’s about 1 gallon of water).
    2. Snack on something healthy, like edamame beans, a favorite of soccer player Carli Lloyd.
    3. Have a hearty breakfast.  A typical breakfast for runner Ashton Eaton includes a heap of eggs, turkey bacon, toast, and Greek yogurt sprinkled with muesli.
    4. Stick to lean meats.  Gymnist Jonathan Horton says that for dinner he usually has a lean meat main course like salmon or chicken.
    5. Stock up on protein.  Table Tennis Olympian Michael Landers says you have to keep your protein up to make it through a workout.  Try eating more nuts, eggs, or fish.

  • Team Olympics Fashion – London 2012 Olympic Uniforms

Starting Friday, sports enthusiasts around the world will be cheering on their favorite Olympic team members, dressed in top-of-the-line clothes made specifically for the games.  Each Olympic year the best designers around the world are requisitioned to create uniforms that represent their countries personality.  By incorporating patriotic colors, and often the national flag, designers are able to make something special for athletes to feel pride while wearing throughout the games.  Some uniforms have hidden symbolism, while others are blatantly flashy.  This year’s London Olympics Uniforms are sure to please fans:

    Australia

    Australia Olympic Uniforms 2012

Australian uniforms for the 2012 Summer Olympics were designed by Sportscraft.  These blazers are lined with the names of gold medalists from throughout History, so that although the athletes have the weight of their nation on their shoulders, they also have the support of their predecessors.   Dunlop Valley Shoes also lined the inside of the white tennis shoes athletes are wearing with past winners names so that team members are literally walking in their footsteps.

    United States

    America US Olympic Uniforms 2012

American Uniforms by Ralph Lauren were controversially made in China this year, fueling the creation of an act to make all future Team USA uniforms within the actual US.  Some argue that the uniforms look like flight attendant outfits, while others approve of the conservative, formality of them.  Team USA will certainly be looking their finest this Friday night!

    Great Britain

Stella McCartney partnered with Adidas to design Great Britain’s Uniforms this year, featuring a reconfigured Union Jack.  As the home team of these summer games, the Brits have got to show off their national pride.

    Germany

These German parade outfits were designed by Bogner.  Sticking to the age old stereotype of women wearing pink and men in blue, these uniforms don’t particularly convey Germany’s national orange and yellow colors.  They definitely pop though, and will allow fans to easily find this countries team amidst the mass of athletes during Friday’s parade.

    Jamaica

    Jamaican Olympic Uniforms 2012

PUMA Jamaican Olympic team uniforms were designed by Cedella Marley, daughter of the legendary Bob Marley.  These team wears feature Jamaican flag colors in a fashionable light.  The chic, formal uniforms for Friday’s parade are the most stylish of all, and the everyday outfits for specific sporting events are designed to represent the beauty of the country.
